Kyochon Chicken

Iksan City Hall, where I work, is located in Jeollabuk-do.

It is about 200km away from Seoul. Currently, the building is 50 years old and very old.

A new office building is being built behind the building. It is scheduled to move in in September 2024. It’s very close to the office so it’s always noisy. I am patiently waiting for the day to move in.

The department I work in is “Citizen Safety Department.”

We are working to protect the safety of citizens from disasters and calamities.

There are 26 employees working in the office. The office is old and broken in some places. They say there is no need to fix it because we are moving soon. If this continues, I don’t think we will be able to protect not only the safety of citizens but also my own safety.

There is one manager and five section managers in the office. Usually, the manager is the oldest, followed by the section manager, but I am currently the oldest. I am 57 years old and the manager is 55 years old. Normally, at my age, I would have to be a section manager, or at least an assistant manager. But I am at the bottom. The reason I am at the bottom is because I became a civil servant late in life.

After lunch time, SeoHyon brought fried chicken. SeoHyon takes care of chores in the office. The Red Cross sent four fried chickens to console employees who suffered hardships due to the typhoon.

‘This is what the Red Cross does. But couldn’t they help those who are more difficult?’ I thought.

I had high expectations because it was “Kyochon Chicken”, but it didn’t seem to taste good, perhaps because it was black on the outside. Maybe it was because it had been a while since we had lunch, but no one was eating, so everything was left on the table. I felt awkward eating alone, so I went to the manager and suggested that we eat chicken together. As the manager started eating, the employees also gathered around the table and started eating. There is one box left until I get off work. There should be two boxes left, but it looks like someone took one box. Who took it? I took the remaining box. I plan to eat it instead of breakfast. Today was one of the peaceful days.
